§ 1-8.6. Pay rates in promotion, demotion, or reclassification.

  • When an employee is promoted, demoted, transferred or reclassified, his rate of pay in the new position will be established in accordance with the following rules:

    (a)

    When a nonsupervisory employee that meets all of the requirements of the new position is promoted to a supervisory position, they shall be placed in the new grade at a step that gives them the equivalent of not more than a three-step increase of the former grade or step 1 of the new grade, whichever is larger.

    When a nonsupervisory employee that meets all of the requirements of the new position is promoted to another nonsupervisory position, they shall be placed in the new grade at a step that gives them the equivalent of not more than a two-step increase of the former grade or step 1 of the new grade, whichever is larger.

    (b)

    When an employee is demoted to a position for which he is qualified his salary will be set at the step in the lower pay range which provides the smallest decrease in pay if the action is not for reasons of unsatisfactory performance or failure in conduct; or if the action is a result of unsatisfactory performance or failure in personal conduct, his salary will be adjusted to the minimum of the new range or to two steps below his current salary, whichever is lower;

    (c)

    When an employee is transferred to a position in the same class or to a position in a different class at the same pay grade, he will continue to be paid at the same step rate;

    (d)

    When a position is reclassified to a higher grade, the employee in that position shall be placed in a step of the new grade that gives them the equivalent of one step increase of the former grade or step 1 of the new grade, whichever is larger. Wherever possible, the reclassification of a position should become effective as of July 1, of the next fiscal year.
